The number of mass layoffs in Missouri climbed 32 percent from 22 in the third quarter of last year to 29 in the fourth quarter, according to research by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

3,518 filed for unemployment insurance in the quarter compared to 3,449 in the third quarter.

The quarterly figures from the statistical agency within the U.S. Department of Labor follows a report last month citing Missouri as the state with the highest, statistically significant, month-over-month drop in employment. The state lost 11,800 jobs in December.
